View Article  Hank Hates Snakes

At yesterday’s International Sportsman’s Expo in Phoenix, Hank, a golden retriever, seems reluctant (to say the least) to continue his snake training. Hank is already smart enough to avoid what he fears! Yes, that is a live rattlesnake.

Two years ago, my producer and I fell in love with those wonderful dock-diving dogs when we saw them at Westworld. I shot video of them last fall, again at Westworld, and when we heard the Splash Dogs would be at the International Sportsman Expo at the Arizona State Fairgrounds, we marked the event in red on our calendars.

The weather for the past few days has been lousy: it actually rained on March 11th and it was cold and nasty for the Splash Dogs event, but those who came to the fairgrounds got a thrill. In among the exhibits for bow hunting contraptions and fly fishing gear was this portable Splash Dogs dock. As with our other times seeing the dogs, it was fun to see the varied breeds fly through the air. Greg Abner, the announcer, does a great job getting the crowd in the mood and he was in prime form. Tony Reed, president of Splash Dogs, does a great job organizing and you can see the respect the handlers have for Tony and his hard work.

For reasons that aren’t worth explaining, there actually was a competing dock diving dog event in the area, so some of the regulars didn’t make it to the Splash Dogs event and a few--such as the amazing Sisko--came late and performed as opposed to being part of the competition. Watchjing Sisko, handled by Rob Barnhill of Folsom, Calif., is like watching a well-trained athlete who gets better with each passing jump.

Today’s winner was Chief, handled by Pete Meyer of Grizzly Flatts, Calif.

There’s a Splash Dogs event in Anaheim at the end of April--not sure what’s going to stop us from attending.

Here’s a look at The Power Paws Assistance Dogs fund-raiser. You can see those who participated in the “Walk ‘n’ Roll Dog Walk” returning from their short course. There’s the usual intermingling of dogs, dog owners and those who just plain love dogs. And if you have never seen dogs bob for apples, you are in for a treat.

The Podsafe music is “Glass of Wine” by The New Autonomous Folksingers. Sounds like something from the movie, “A Mighty Wind.”

A second (and slightly shorter) clip of the Arziona Great Dane Drill team. Words cannot do it justice.

Yes, this is (according to the Chinese New Year) “The Year of the Dog.” The commemorate the celebration, we went to The Power Paws Assistance Dogs fund-raiser at Tempe Town Lake. The highlight--I mean the real highlight--had to be the Arizona Great Dane Drill Team. No need to imagine what it’s like to see the giant, regal animals move in unison (a form of obedience training), just take a look. In fact, this is one of two clips.

View Article  Video Clip: The (Second Annual) Reindoggie Parade

If there’s a funky dog event being held anywhere within driving distance of our home, it looks like we’re there. Today, we went to the second annual Reindoggie Parade in downtown Scottsdale. Dogs and their owners from all over the area, dressed in their best holiday costumes, came to the Hilton Village parking lot to compete. I think the winners in the various categories got some sort of trophy (presented by Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross), but we didn’t stick around for that.

Here's another clip from the dog agility show from last week at Westworld in Scottsdale. A Japanese competitor in the Ashley Whippet Flying Disc competition puts her dog through the paces. My wife and I actually once met the Ashley Whippet; that's a story for another day.

View Article  Video: Dock Dogs

After last year’s posting of pictures from the Dock Dogs event at Westworld here in Scottsdale, I was psyched to come back in 2005 at shoot video. So, on Veterans Day, we made our way to the U.S. Dog Agility Association event in which the amazing diving dogs were featured.

It’s a long clip, but it’s worth all six-plus minutes. The star of the show is Gabe, a flying Border Collie who is owned by and trained by Todd Bobula of Dayon, Nevada. I spoke to Todd for a minute after the event and the bond between man and dog was remarkable. The announcer said (and he might have been joking) that Gabe delivers invoices to customers’ doors for Todd as part of his business. I would not be surprised. The other star of the day is actually Gabe’s son, Bolt, who flies just like his dad. Another member of the Bobula clan handles Bolt.

Today was the second day of heats (or waves, as they call them) with the finals on Sunday afternoon.

View Article  Video Clip: 2005 Wiener Dog Nationals

We had The Wiener Dog Nationals circled on our calendar. Held at the Phoenix Greyhound Park (third annual), it’s an event in which dachshunds compete in “races” to benefit Arizona Adopt a Greyhound. Last year, I had a lot of pictures on a former blog, but tonight, the videos will do it even greater justice. It’s fun to watch these crazy legged little animals run their hearts out.

We were introduced to the event last year when my wife met the owner of Squirt (her name is J.D. Ecker) outside a supermarket. She was raising money for her guy to race and that led us to head down to the park. In this video montage, Squirt is the sweet dachshund who is wearing a hot dog bun. He’s difficult to miss.

The timing was a little off as the monsoon rains came shortly after the first heat. The races are interspersed throughout the night between the greyhound heats. I will not watch the “real” dog races; the concept gives me the willies
